Addressing the Conference on Economy of Urban Tourism underway in Tehran, Hossein Mohammad Pour Zarandi, said with a population of 35 million people, Tokyo had yet the world’s most powerful urban economy with $ 2tr.: “however, municipalities should abandon inefficient methods of financing such as selling density since it is the origin of many urban problems,” he added.
“Today metropolises have many problems because of nature of their formation; although they are the centers of population, wealth, specialty, socio-economic bases, and pioneer engines of national economy, they face many issues in social, economic, and ecological aspects such as poverty, informal settlements, environmental unsustainability, air pollution, greenhouse gasses, high energy consumption, and particularly revenue unsustainability,” Zarandi detailed about the urban issues.
“Air pollution and environmental issues are the most pronounced in Tehran like other metropolises; a structural and comprehensive outlook is required to address the issues; a second challenge is urban revenues and reliance on unsustainable municipal resources; unsustainable methods block the path for urban sustainable development,” he added. “Tokyo is a perfect example of success in metropolitan centers, with 35 million people and world’s most powerful urban economy.”
“Duties, taxes on properties, finance, and recycling technology are sustainable methods of financing and good papers have been submitted to the secretariat of the International Conference on Urban Economy, we hope the conference and its achievement would help with solving problems of city managers to tackle issues of development problems,” Zarandi emphasized.
