TEHRAN, Apr. 23 (MNA) – Head of Strategic Research Center at the Expediency Council Ali Akbar Velayati said Iran would reject any plan against Syria’s national interests.

“Iran supports people’s self-determination and Syria's legitimate government,” Velayati said on Saturday, during his meeting with Syrian Ambassador to Tehran Adnan Mahmoud.

The two sides discussed the latest regional and political developments, especially those in relation to the negotiations over Syrian crisis.

Pointing to the several years of resistance against terrorist groups and their supporters, Velayati noted, the axis of resistance proved fight and faith help stand against all difficulties, terrorism and extremism, and will certainly achieve victory.

"Islamic Republic of Iran supports Syria’s territorial integrity and independence and President Bashar Assad’s rule of law; any plan that is against the interests of the Syrian people will not be accepted by Iranian government; recent parliamentary elections in difficult conditions indicated an important step to show the Syrian government’s authority and the recognition of Syrian people’s votes," Velayati underlined, adding Iran is present in Syria at the invitation of the legitimate government of Syria and not the other countries.

Adnan Mahmoud, for his part, hailing Iran’s support for the people and government of Syria and presenting a report on the topics discussed, said the Syrian government despite all the problems and bottlenecks posed by the rebels, terrorists and their supporters, did its best to achieve a plan which is going to apply the national interests, after about 5 years of resistance.

He added that the proposed plan by terrorists and opposition groups bears lots of similarities with the Zionist regime’s and unfortunately some Arabic countries that sponsor terrorists hold no position against the actions of the Zionist regime; but apply any kind of action against Arab Muslim nations.

Mahmoud also hailed the Leader of Islamic Revolution’s key role in guiding and supporting the resistance stream of the Syrian people against terrorists.

He expressed gratitude over Velayati’s recent remarks on Syria and the region which came at a critical period bearing serious and positive effects for the region and talks, and a serious response to the rebels, terrorists and their supporters.
