TEHRAN, Apr. 03 (MNA) – Head of the Judiciary has appointed new prosecutor-general of the country after Ebrahim Raeisi was appointed by the Leader as the chairman of Astan Quds Razavi, leaving the position vacant.

In the decree issued on Sunday by Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani, Hojatoleslam Mohammad Jafar Montazeri was named as the new prosecutor-general to replace Raeisi; “by this decree, you are appointed as prosecutor-general and would be expected to accept the heavy responsibilities in a sensitive position; set in priority hearing the cases of the downtrodden and under-represented social classes and support and defend the legitimate rights of the citizens,” reads the decree.

An inauguration ceremony will also introduce Montazeri as the new head of the prosecutor-general’s office on upcoming Tuesday. Montazeri was serving as the head of Iran's Court of Administrative Justice and now will replace Ebrahim Raisi who is the new chairman of the Razavi shrine and the organizations affiliated to it.
