Iranian Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian, who headed a 30-member delegation of private sector investors and government executives to Sri Lanka, headed the 11th meeting of Iran-Sri Lanka Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation (JCEC) on Wednesday in Colombo jointly with Abdul Rishad Bathiudeen, Minister of Trade and Commerce of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka is seeking development of bilateral relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran in realms of trade and economy, and the JCEC provided a good ground for mulling over cooperation on water and electricity, said the Sri Lankan minister on the sidelines of the meeting.
In addition to sitting the eleventh session of JCEC, Chitchian also met with Sri Lankan Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayake and Arjuna Mahendran the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, during his two and a half day stay in Colombo.
The Uma Oya project funded by Export Development Bank of Iran was one of the areas of the talks Chitchian had with Sri Lankan officials.
Valioddin Maslahati, an official of Iran’s Power Generation and Transmission Company (TAVANIR), had recently told the media that Iran has agreed to execute the project of providing more than 1000 Sri Lankan villages with electricity.
