Held in Uzbekistan, the AFC Futsal Championship saw Iran’s national futsal team wrap up top spot in Group B with a 13-2 thrashing of previously unbeaten Iraq at the Uzbekistan Stadium on Sunday.
Iran’s Hossein Tayebi scored four times helping himself to a first half hat-trick.
Other Iranian athletes who found the net were Mohammad Taheri and Mahdi Javid who collected braces as well as Asghar Hassanzadeh, Hamid Ahmadi and Farhad Tavakoli.
Waleed Khalid and Amjad Kareem got on the score sheet for the Iraqi team.
“We are just doing our job, we’re not focused on how many goals we win by or what other nations are doing we just want to complete our own goals and aims,” said Iran coach Mohammad Nazemalsharie.
“We’ve said right from the start of the competition that our sole focus and aim is on winning this championship and nothing has changed but it was definitely good for us to play in front of a large crowd of local fans and we thank them for coming as they have been wonderful throughout the event,” he continued.
Considering the 2-nil victory of host Uzbeks over Lebanon, the Iranian outfit will meet Kyrgyzstan on Wednesday in the quarter-final stage.
