Shiraz in Fars province, southern Iran, was proposed to World Wrestling Union as a host city for 2016 Greco-Roman World Cup, on December, after the United World Wrestling bureau member KIM Il-Jong from South Korea traveled to city of Shiraz to examine the city's facilities for hosting the World Cup.
Following his visit to Shiraz, President of Iran Wrestling Federation Rasoul Khadem held negotiations with the related authorities in the city to pursue the hosting of 2016 Greco-Roman World Cup, Spokesman for the Islamic Republic of Iran Wrestling Federation Alireza Rezaei announced on Saturday.
He added no serious measures has been taken by provincial officials to pursue the hosting.
Due to the continuous pursuit of United World Wrestling (UWW) over the fulfilment of the obligations of host cities, Iran Wrestling Federation will wait for necessary measures taken by Fars province’s authorities on the issue by March, Rezaei added.
He warned the Federation, otherwise, will resume talks with UWW to change the assigned host to another city.
Iran announced its readiness for hosting the competitions in December 2014 and UWW President Nenad Lalovic, in his approval letter, expressed his pleasure of Iran’s hosting and has congratulated Iran on holding such great event.
Russia and the United States were also candidates for hosting the event.
