After confirming that over one million refugees and migrants have fled to Europe by sea this year, the UNHCR said most of those people come from countries hit by war, and they need the world protection.
According to the UN Refugee Agency, 49 percent of the refugees come from Syria, 21 percent from Afghanistan, and 8 percent from Iraq.
With much lower percentages are Eritrea (4 percent), Pakisten, Nigeria, and Somalia, each one of them with 2 percent, and Sudan, Gambia, and Mali, with one percent each one.
The UNHCR stressed that the majority of those dangerous journeys need the world protection because they escape from war, violence, and persecution in their native countries.
Twenty-five percent of the undocumented are children, 17 percent are adult women and, 58 percent adult men.
The agency confirmed Greece as the main arrival point with 844,176 arrivals through its coasts, while 152,000 entered through Italy, 3,592 through Spain, and 105 through Malta.
UNHCR's latest estimates show that 3,735 lost their lives in the sea journey, believed drowned, though the real number could be higher because the figures are based on testimonies from those who survived the journey.
