SEUOL, Nov. 18 (MNA) – South Korea's leading news wire agency Yonhap on Monday received the first award given by an association of Asia-Pacific news agencies to distinguish those who have made exceptional contributions to the organization.

39th OANA Technical and Executive Committee named Yonhap as the winner of the newly-introduced OANA Award for Excellence in News Agency Quality.

The award was first proposed by Russian News Agency TASS and approved by members during the previous meeting in Kuala Lumpur.

Yearly “Award for Excellence in News Agency Quality” is designed to further experience exchange between OANA members and to improve the quality of making news.

The award, which is open for all categories of employees at member news agencies, is granted to those who take major steps in order to improve the performance of their News Agency.

Eleven candidates, including Iran’s  Mehr News Agency, Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Turkey's Anatoly (Anadolu) News Agency, Australian Associated Press (AAP), Russian News Agency TASS, Azerbaijan's Trend News Agency and etc., were in the running this year, with two rounds of votes by the OANA executive board determining the winner.

The jury of the competition consists of representatives of the executive committee, which includes Australian Associated Press (AAP), Turkey's Anatoly, Malaysia’s Bernama, IRNA, Kyodo News of Japan, Russian TASS, Azerbaijan’s Trend, south Korea’s Yonhap, Mongolian News Agency Montsame, vietnam News Agency (VNA), China’s Xinhua News Agency, Emirates News Agency (WAM) and Azerbaijan State News Agency (Azertac).

The award includes a $1,000 cash prize, and the winner journalist or correspondent will receive the permission to attend the next OANA Meeting.
