Hossein Jaberi Ansari has been newly-appointed as Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson to replace Marzieh Afkham, who had held the position since September 2013 following the presidential election that brought Hassan Rouhani to power.
Jaberi Ansari, a former ambassador to Libya, is currently the director general of the Middle East Department at the Foreign Ministry.
A foreign ministry official, while confirming the appointment of Jaberi Ansari, said he would assume office as Iran’s FM spokesman in the next two weeks.
Some reports maintain that the current spokeswoman of the Foreign Ministry is to move to Malaysia to become the Islamic Republic's first female ambassador.
Afkham, a career diplomat, had served as Foreign Ministry’s Director General for Information and Press for eight years, as well as Foreign Ministry’s Director General for Public Diplomacy under former Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi.
