TEHRAN, Oct. 3 (MNA) – An emergency meeting of ECO council of Ministers was held on the sidelines of the 70th UN General Assembly in New York on Friday.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif chaired the emergency meeting of Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) and the meeting was attended by foreign ministers or top-ranked representatives of ECO member counries.

After Zarif’s opening speech and the statements made by other member country’s representatives, the Secretary General of ECO made a report on the organization’s recent activities and the progress made in the fields of trade and investment, transport and communication, agriculture, energy, and the environment and made comments on the draft of ECO’s Vision Document for 2016-2025 which was discussed by member countries.

ECO countries further praised the efforts of the Secretaries to expand its activities emphasizing on the promotion of cooperation between members as well as with other regional and international organizations.

Later at the meeting, ECO’s Council of Foreign Ministers approved documents and reports of the organization’s various meetings over the past few years including ECO Council of Permanent Representatives, ECO Planning Council meeting, Ministerial and other thematic meeting as well as that they approved ECO’s financial and budget documents.

The meeting also exchanged views on the current state of the organization with regard to financial matters and the reforms needed in administrative, regulatory and budget areas and made relevant decisions in order to turn ECO into a more dynamic and efficient organization.

In their closing remarks, ECO representatives reiterated their commitment to promote regional cooperation.

ECO is a regional economic cooperation organization with membership of 10 countries including Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

ECO Council of Ministers is the highest decision-making body of the organization which holds a meeting annually in one of member countries.
