In the last leg of his regional tour, Zarif visited Iraq and held meetings with Iraqi officials including President Fouad Massoum, Foreign Minister Ebrahim Jafari, Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi and Head of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq Ammar al-Hakim.
In his meeting with Ammar al-Hakim later on Monday, Zarif said the region was plagued by violence and extremism, as some countries are adding more fuel to the conflict without due to illusion and irrationality.
Calling Iran-Iraq relations very special, Zarif said Iraqi people are at the forefront of fight against extremism and terrorism and Iran would always stand beside the Iraqi people and government.
Stressing that Iran considers the security of the region and its neighboring countries as its own, Zarif said all countries in the region have a common enemy which shows hatred for Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, Turks and Arabs.
Ammar al-Hakim, for his part, congratulated the nuclear agreement reached between Iran and the 5+1 on July 14, stressing that the deal opened a new chapter for cooperation based on dialogue and diplomacy.
Underlining that the agreement will have many benefits for the region, al-Hakim expressed his satisfaction with the Islamic Republic of Iran's intentions to establish and maintain peace in the region through dialogue.
