During a meeting with visiting Swiss Deputy Foreign Minister Yves Rossier, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian stressed the need for closer cooperation between the two countries in combating terrorism and extremism in the region.
He touched upon the rights of Syrian and Yemeni people in deciding for their own internal affairs, adding “the pressure exerted by some countries in a bid to overthrow the legitimate Syrian government was a dangerous initiative that has led to the strengthening of terrorist groups and turned into a regional and global threat.”
The Iranian official further stressed the need for an immediate dispatch of humanitarian aid to the war-stricken people of Yemen, calling for a halt to Saudi Arabia’s military aggression and the promotion of political and national dialogue in Yemen.
The Swiss diplomat, for his part, deemed positive the cooperation between the two countries as well as with the United Nations, urging the continuation of such cooperation in improving the humanitarian conditions in Syria.
He also evaluated the nuclear agreement between Iran and the 5+1 group of countries reached on July 14 as a milestone for Iran to have an even greater influence in its relations with regional countries.
The Swiss deputy foreign minister also held a meeting with Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Tuesday, stating the country’s eagerness to expand bilateral ties with Iran in the fields of trade and economy.
Following Iran nuclear agreement and UN Security Council resolution 2231 over Tehran’s nuclear program, political and economic delegations from various countries have been making visits to Iran.
Last week, a German delegation headed by Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel, visited Tehran. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius and EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini are also due in Tehran next week.
