TEHRAN, Jul. 01 (MNA) – Tehran is hosting a cartoon exhibition titled ‘Silent Flight’ in honor of the 27th anniversary of the 1988 shooting down of an Iranian passenger flight by the US Navy, killing all 274 on board.

Concurrent with the 27th anniversary of the shooting down of an Iranian civilian passenger flight – Iran Air Flight 655 – by the United States Navy guided missile cruiser on July 3, 1988 which killed all 274 passengers onboard, 22 Iranian artists have gathered together to remember the event by showcasing cartoons at Iranian House of Cartoon and Caricature as well as Valiasr underpass.

The exhibition features cartoons by Kambiz Derambakhsh, Bahman Abdi, Javad Alizadeh and Hossein Rahimkhani among others. The Silent Flight cartoon gallery will be held from June 3 to 18.

Iran Air Flight 655 was on a routine flight from Iran's southern city of Bandar Abbas to Dubai when it was targeted by the United States Navy's missile cruiser USS Vincennes on July 3, 1988, killing all passengers on board. US officials at the time claimed their naval officers had mistaken the Airbus A300 for an Iranian F-14 Tomcat fighter jet, however, all technical documents and official reports were indicating that US forces were aware of the civilian nature of the flight.
