Ali Akbar Velayati made the remarks while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a Monday meeting with UN Secretary General's Special Envoy on Lebanon Affairs Segrid Kaag in Tehran.
He criticized the West for its excessive demands for inspection of Iran’s military sites for the sake of US domestic politics and reaffirmed that the Islamic Republic would never allow foreign inspection of its sensitive sites.
“The negotiating parties know that there is no sign of deviation in Iran’s nuclear energy from its peaceful purposes; they are just looking for excuses to harass Iran and impose sanctions,” he said.
Elsewhere, he referred to his meeting with Segrid Kaag, saying the two sides conferred on the current situation in Lebanon and its future. “Ms. Kaag was deeply concerned about the presence of over 2 million Syrian and Palestinian displaced in Lebanon as well as the situation in Syria and the ongoing fight between the ISIL terrorists and the Syrian legitimate government,” he said.
He added that Kaag was concerned the crisis in Syria might also extend into the Lebanese territory. “Ms. Kaag believed that the United Nations must declare its opposition to any military aggression by opposition groups and return peace to Syria and Iraq,” he said.
The UN undersecretary also met with Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and discussed the prevailing political status in Lebanon and the volatile Middle East region.
