TEHRAN, May 18 (MNA) – Iran’s Leader has warned against the propagandist use of religion and ethnicity by the enemy to create division and conflict among the Shia and the Sunni.

Iran’s Leader Ayatollah Khamenei received staff members of Peshmerga Martyrs Congress, headquartered in Sanandaj, capital of Kurdistan Province in western Iran, on May 4 and the remarks was published by Leader's office website today.

While commending the congress for commemorating the martyrs of the Kurdish Muslim Peshmerga, the Leader maintained that the enemy’s policies in employing the elements of ‘ethnicity’ and ‘sect’ to disrupt the security in the Kurdistan Region and turning this region against the Islamic Revolution have completely failed.

“The enemy will not stand still and do nothing; they will continue spreading hostility as much as they can by the means of security, propaganda and financial tools and resources that they have in possession,” he siad.

The Leader, however, stressed that the enemy could not use ‘ethnic provocations’ against the Kurds, but some countries are seeking to incite religious prejudices and differences among the Shias and Sunnis and some others become involved in these plots due to ignorance.

Referring to Britain’s long history in attempting to split Shias and Sunnis for its own benefits, Ayatollah Khamenei then raised the current case of the US Congress bill under the pretext of supporting the Sunnis in Iraq, calling into question the Americans’ sincerity in their alleged benevolence forIraqi Sunnis.

The draft of the US annual defense bill, which was released on April 27 by the House Armed Services Committee, urges the US administration to recognize separate Kurdish and Sunni states and provide them with at least 25 percent of the 715-million-USD aid money allegedly planned to be given to the Iraqi government to help it fight the ISIL terrorist group.

Iraqi politicians and clerics are opposed to the idea, saying that only the Iraqi people can decide about the future of their country.

“The US is against anything that bears the smallest traces of Islam. For them, there is no difference between Shias and Sunnis, and they only use religious sects and ethnicity as a pretext to create division,” the Leader concluded.
