TEHRAN, Feb. 02 (MNA) – Managing Director of Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO) has said the country would become self-sufficient in producing enough plasma for plasma-derived medicines.

Dr. Ali Akbar Pourfathollah, while announcing this in a report on blood transfusion achievements after the Islamic Revolution, said so far no developing country except for Iran had been able to obtain the knowledge of collecting plasma with international standards in order to produce plasma-derived medicines; “currently, 150,000 liter of surplus plasma is used to produce medicine under agreements with European companies,” he said.

“Within three years we will become self-sufficient in collecting the required plasma for producing plasma-derived medicines,” said Pourfathollah, noting that in addition to the 150,000 liters of plasma in IBTO, an additional 150,000 liter has been produced in the private sector and the figure would reach an annual 600,000 liter in three years.

According to Pourfathollah, Iran would then be able to export its plasma-derived medicines to the countries in the region since none of the Middle Eastern or Eastern Mediterranean countries have the capacity to produce these kinds of medicine.

Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO) is the only nationally accredited organization in Iran that performs blood transfusion procedures ranging from blood donor recruitment as well as blood distribution. The organization provides its services free of charge. The mission of IBTO is to provide and ensure a safe and adequate blood supply in Iran. IBTO fulfils its goals through 30 regional blood centers, which are located in 30 different provinces with more than 200 blood donation sites across the country.
