“Melbourne is a tragic story about the irresponsibility of young people,” said Javidi at the introduction of his feature film, “in my opinion, youth today do not want to shoulder the responsibilities for their actions compared to the previous generation.”
Javidi’s Melbourne which was also awarded the Best Scrip at the 2014 Gijón International Film Festival, was inspired by something that happened for one of his friends, whose baby had fallen into such a deep sleep that they could not wake her up and assumed her to be dead.
“This was the kind of sorrow and anxiety which I wanted the audience to feel deeply, and I filmed almost all of it with natural light, subtle make-up, and no open sequences,” he said.
Melbourne, in a suffocating atmosphere, recounts the story of a young Iranian couple who are about to leave for Melbourne to continue their studies. But before leaving, and in the hustle of preparing for the trip, they neglect taking care of a baby they are in charge with, and this leads to the baby’s death.
Nima Javidi was born in 1980. He’s a mechanical engineer but he’s been shooting short films since 1999. So far he has done six short films, two documentaries and over 30 TV ads. Melbourne is his first long feature.
Melbourne has been screened in several international film festivals including the 27th Tokyo International Film Festival (SIFF), the 10th Zurich Film Festival, and the 16th International Film Festival Bratislava, Slovakia. It was also the Golden Pyramid winner for Best Film at 36th Cairo Film Festival (CIFF).
