Syria, Iraq sign memorandum on joint security cooperation

TEHRAN, May 12 (MNA) – Syrian Interior Minister Maj. Gen. Mohammad al-Rahmoun signed with his Iraqi counterpart Abdul Amir al-Shammari in Baghdad Sunday a memorandum of joint security cooperation that includes five axes.

In a joint press conference with Al-Shammari, Major General Al-Rahmon said that cooperation with the Iraqi side was discussed in all fields, especially security one , as we suffered from terrorism in our two countries, and there is a criminal phenomenon curried out by drug and people trafficking gangs, so we signed a memorandum of Joint Security Cooperation, SANA reported.

Al-Rahmon stressed that ” security cooperation with Iraq previously in the field of Drug Control has resulted in the dismantling of some networks, and the seizure of quantities of narcotic substances

“Iraq has made great strides in eliminating the criminal gangs of ISIL/Daesh”, Rahmoun said, adding that there are still hotbeds of ISIL terrorist organization in Syria that carry out attacks from time to time.

In response to a question from SANA correspondent in Baghdad, Minister Rahmon said “the two brotherly countries suffer from the phenomenon of cross-border terrorism, international border control, armed terrorist organizations and other criminal phenomena such as trafficking in drug and people, money laundering and others

And the signed agreement is to promote bilateral cooperation in these fields with the aim of eliminating these phenomena, in addition to enhancing cybersecurity and exchanging experiences and training between the two ministries, Rahmon added.

In turn, al-Shammari said that during the talks with the Syrian side, all the items on the agenda were discussed, in addition to signing a memorandum of joint security cooperation between the two countries.
