Manufacturing and launching satellites is an important part of space industry which can create a large amount of revenue by offering satellite services, so much so that 1459 satellites were sent to space by the end of 2016.
Concerning the reason why plans to manufacture and launch satellite have not been operationalized in the country, Hassan Haddadpour said “in general, there are two type of satellites: Remote Sensing and Communications. Remote sensing satellites are equipped with technologies which have become prevalent in the world, within the past 50 years. Countries which enjoy access to these technologies, despite their lack of experience in developing such technologies, have never suffered from sanctions.”
The head of ISRC went on to say that some countries have simply bought the necessary technologies, while Iran has to work hard to develop knowledge and expertise in the area, adding that space equipment are more technologically advance and more complicated than military equipment.
Haddadpour stressed that they plan to launch a remote sensing satellite within the next two years. The satellite which is named Soha, has an image resolution of 15 million pixels, weighing about 150 Kilograms.
As stated by the Iranian official, the research center expects to build and hopefully launch the first communications satellite of the country by 2021.
