In the first meeting of the 5th round of the capital's City Council, Najafi, a reformist politician who had served for nine years as Iran’s education minister, replaced current Tehran Mayor Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf who held the post for 12 years. Najafi will begin his official four-year term as mayor after the approval of Interior Ministry.
On 21 July 2017, Najafi became the most-voted candidate among the seven top candidates for Mayor of Tehran and on 10 August 2017, unanimously elected as the new mayor by the City Council of Tehran defeating Elaheh Koulaei and Mohsen Mehralizadeh, an unofficial decision that took effect after the council convened its first official meeting today, August 23.
Iranian people chose members of the 21-seat Tehran’s City Council in the May city and village council elections, which were held concurrent with the presidential poll.
Mohammad Ali Najafi is an Iranian politician who held cabinet portfolios during the 1990s and 2010s. He is a retired professor of mathematics at Sharif University of Technology.
