Iran expects EU to act independently from US

TEHRAN, Aug. 05 (MNA) – Head of the Strategic Research Center Ali Akbar Velayati said Sat. that European Union is expected to adopt more independent policies from US.

The Iranian senior official made the remarks in a meeting with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini who is in Tehran with a delegation to attend President Rouhani’s swearing-in ceremony on Saturday evening.

During the meeting, Velayati criticized the US for its unconstructive approach toward Iran’s nuclear deal despite the Islamic Republic’s transparent implementation of its nuclear-related commitments.

He further touched upon the current developments in the region, particularly the six-year war in Syria against the Syrian nation and its legitimate government, saying “all of Syria’s infrastructures have been destroyed by certain Western countries such as the US, and it is imperative that European countries pay closer attention to this issue.”

He went on to add, “we will continue our fight against terrorism in the region and are ready to cooperate more closely with the EU until the establishment of global peace and security; otherwise, the scourge of terrorism will spread to Europe and other countries across the world.”

Mogherini, for her part, expressed hope for further development and expansion of cooperation and agreements between Iran and the EU.
