Iran warns about political abusing of OPCW

TEHRAN, Jul. 14 (MNA) – Alireza Jahangiri, Iran’s permanent representative to the OPCW condemned the double standard policy of the organization in treating the case of chemical weapons attack in Syria.

Alireza Jahangiri, Iran’s permanent representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) described the extraordinary meeting of the organization a measure of discriminatory and double standard nature.

He affirmed that the extraordinary meeting of the organization was an effort of some countries to gain political benefits from the technical entity and warned about the consequences of such acts.

Addressing the 85th session of the OPCW Executive Council in The Hague, Alireza Jahangiri voiced deep concern over the use of chemical weapons by terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq and asked for the attention to the nature and effectiveness of these terrorist groups and called for the member states’ condemnation of the incidents.

The Iranian envoy underlined the need for undertaking proper multilateral and unified initiatives to prevent future uses of chemical weapons by terrorist groups.

Commenting on the last week visit of the Director-General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Ambassador Ahmet Üzümcü, to Tehran, Jahangiri described the visit successful and added the trip was to mark the 30th anniversary of Saddam’s chemical attack on Iranian western city of Sardasht.
