Iran urges UN to play more active role in regional stability

TEHRAN, May 31 (MNA) – Iranian Parliament's General Director for International Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said the UN is expected to play a more active role in promoting regional peace and stability.

He made the remarks in a meeting with UN representative in Tehran Gary Lewis on Tuesday.

Pointing to the UN’s environmental and developmental activities, Amir-Abdollahian said that Iran’s achievements in developmental fields including human and technological progress have been made while certain agents are insisting on their false strategies against the Iranian independent and capable nation under unfounded pretexts and efforts to intensify unjust sanctions.

Voicing concern over the regional situation, he underlined that West Asian region is getting more aggravated in terms of security due to the false strategies, and diplomatic solutions become harder and harder.

He said that Bahraini government’s recent move against Shia cleric Sheikh Issa Qassim, which happened in the wake of Trump’s trip to the region, has deteriorated regional situation and no information is available about the fate of the prominent scholar.

"Under such conditions, UN move to defend human rights and prevent systematic violation of human rights is essential," he noted.

Lewis, for his part, expressed hope to take advantage of good record of collaboration between Iran and UN, while reminding the history of UN Office cooperation with the Iranian government.

He noted that suitable grounds are ready for promoting cooperation, and stressed the need for observing human rights in the region and resolve the regional crises through political solution.
