The talented mountaineer of Iran, who began his final ascent to Lhotse in the Himalayas on Friday, successfully conquered the 8,516-meter mountain to fulfill his lifetime dream.
Gheichizas completed his ascent to Lhotse, which means ‘South Peak’ in Tibetan, without supplementary oxygen.
He had previously walked up Himalayas’ 13 other eight-thousand-meter peaks without supplementary oxygen and the ascend to the last eight-thousander, Lhotse, recorded his name as one of the few climbers who have climbed all 14 peaks higher than 8,000 meters.
Azim Gheichisaz, who has started summiting foreign peaks since 2002, is a mountain climber of Iranian Azerbaijani descent. He is a member of Iranian national mountaineering team. Except in ascending to Everest, he did all of those ascents without supplementary oxygen.
So far, only 35 mountaineers, including Iran’s Gheichisaz, have successfully managed to conquer all Himalayas’ 14 eight-thousanders.
Lhotse is the fourth highest mountain in the world at 8,516 meters, after Mount Everest, K2, and Kangchenjunga. Part of the Everest massif, Lhotse is connected to the latter peak via the South Col.
In addition to the main summit at 8,516 meters above sea level, the mountain comprises the smaller peaks Lhotse Middle (East) at 8,414 m, and Lhotse Shar at 8,383 m. The summit is on the border between the Tibet region of China and the Khumbu region of Nepal.
