Iran sanctions 9 US firms as countermeasure

TEHRAN, May 18 (MNA) – In a statement issued Thu., Iran’s Foreign Ministry has imposed sanctions on 9 American firms and individuals as counter-measure for US new sanctions on Iran for its missile program.

The statement notes the US extension of sanctions relief on Iran under the nuclear deal, followed by new sanctions on the Islamic Republic for its missile program announced by the Treasury Department on Wednesday, as a way to diminish the positive effects of the implementation of its commitments under the JCPOA.

The new sanctions concern “Iranian defense officials, an Iranian entity, and a China-based network that supplied missile-applicable items to a key Iranian defense entity'" as announced by the US Treasury Department.

As a counter-measure to Washington move, Tehran has imposed sanctions on 9 American individuals and companies for human rights violations through “direct or indirect cooperation with the Zionist regime in committing crimes against humanity in Palestine or other terrorist acts carried out by this regime; participation and assistance in supporting Takfiri terrorism and repression of people in the region; and effective cooperation in acts against the national security of the Islamic Republic of Iran”.

The updated list of sanctioned American firms and individuals will be released after obtaining approval by relevant Iranian authorities.

The statement further highlights Iran’s legal right to developing its defense capabilities to preserve its sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity, adding that its missile program does not violate any of Iran’s international commitments and the 2231 resolution.
