Female volleyball outfit leaves for Maldives

TEHRAN, Jan. 25 (MNA) – National Iranian female football team left Tehran for Malé to attend the 2018 FIVB Women’s World Volleyball Championship Qualification Tournament for the AVC Central Zone.

The AVC qualification tournament is scheduled to begin on January 27 in the capital of Maldives and will run through January 29.

Accordingly, the Iranian outfit left Tehran for Qatar’s Doha on Wednesday morning and later departed for Malé in the Maldives.

Headed by Majda Cicic, Soudabeh Bagherpour, Shabnam Alikhani, Maedeh Borhani, Farzaneh Zarei, Shokufeh Safari, Zeinab Giveh, Farnoush Sheikhi, Negar Kiani, Mahsa Saberi, Mahsa Kadkhoda, Fatemeh Safari as well as Faranak Babolian mark 12 representatives of Iran in the upcoming sportive event.

Majda Cicic is the Slovenian head coach of the Iran women's volleyball team while Fatemeh Abdollahi and Samira Imani Fouladi will also accompany the team as coaches.

Moreover, Iran’s Hedieh Saberi will participate in the qualifying event as an international referee.

For their first encounter, Iranian volleyball players will take up Nepal on the second day of the tournament.

India was initially chosen as the host country for the event. However, due to some internal problems in the Volleyball Federation of India, the Asian Volleyball Confederation decided to shift the competition venue from India to Male’ in Maldives.

Only the top team in this competition will qualify for the next round due to take place later in 2017.

The 2018 World Women's Volleyball Championship will be the 18th staging of the FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship organized by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB). The final tournament will be held in Japan from 30 September to 21 October 2018.

So far presence of three teams has been confirmed in FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship including Japan as the host as well as UAS and Brazil as 2014 and 2015 title-winners, respectively.
