At least five people have lost their lives and more than 50 others have been injured after two passenger trains collided at a station near Shahroud in Iran’s north-central Semnan province at around 7:40 a.m. local time on Friday, Iran's Red Crescent head Pir Hossein Kolivand told Mehr News.
Without mentioning the death toll in the accident, he said “the number of passengers killed is so that the Islamic nation plunges into mourning.”
Ambulances and seven rescue teams have been dispatched to the site, the official said.
“Three helicopters along with dozens of ambulances are offering aid to those injured and due to fire in the number of carriages and the fire spread, it is impossible to give exact figures of the injured and the killed,” he noted.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the collision, Kolivand added.
