Iran’s taekwondo squad earns 5 medals

TEHRAN, Nov. 19 (MNA) – Iran’s junior taekwondo practitioners has so far collected five medals, including two gold ones, at the 2016 WTF World Taekwondo Junior Championships.

On Friday as the third day of the day of the sportive event, Amir Mohammad Bakhshi struck an off draw in the first round of -63-kilogram weight group before thrashing Lithuanian (14-1), Belgic (6-4) and South Korean (12-6) rivals on road to the semifinals where he met and subdued a Turkish opponent (11-8).

In order to clinch a precious gold medal, Iran’s Bakhshi had to overcome the Russian taekwondo fighter in his final showdown.

Iran’s first gold medal, however, had been snatched on Wednesday by Mobina Nejad who stood on top of the podium in the female -42kg weight category. Nejad pulled out a sweeping victory over Spain’s Irene Laguna Perez in her last encounter. Bronze medal of the same group was jointly shared by Sofia Zampetti of Italy and Russia’s Karina Ushakova.

Iran’s only silver medal has been brought home by Ebrahim Safari who conceded a (1-4) defeat against South Korea's Jun Jang in the gold medal match of the male minus 51-kilogram weight category.

Ali Baseri and Mobina Babalu added two bronze trophies to the tally of Iran’s medal at the World Taekwondo Junior Championships underway in Canada.

Baseri gained the over hand over a taekwondo practitioner from Azerbaijan Republic in the semifinals of -55kg weight group to stand on the third podium. Similarly, Babalu won the second bronze medal for Iran in the female -55-kilogram weight division.

Underway at the Bill Copeland Sports Center in the western Canadian city of Burnaby, the 11th edition of WTF World Junior Taekwondo Championships kicked off in Burnaby of Canada on November 16 and will conclude on November 20, 2016.
