Iran, Turkey call for promotion of transport ties

TEHRAN, Nov. 07 (MNA) – Iran’s Akhundi, at a meeting with Turkey’s economy minister, emphasized the need to facilitate transit relations between the two countries.

“Turkey should promote safety of transit routes for Iranian trucks traveling through the Turkish soil,” Iran's Minister of Road and Urban Development Abbas Akhundi said on Sunday at a meeting with Turkey’s Minister of Economy Nihat Zeybekci.

The Iranian official called for completion of railway connection between Iran and Turkey asserting “easier transportation will facilitate trade between the two sides.”

Akhundi Noting that Iranian trucks are occasionally attacked when travelling inside Turkey urging the Turkish side to promote safety for the Iranian trucks.

The Iranian minister also encouraged connecting Bazargan–Kars railway as well as completion of the railroad which surrounds Lake Van.

Turkish Economy Minister Nihat Zeybekci, for his part, voiced his regret for attacks on Iranian trucks in the Turkish soil noting “Turkish government is committed to boosting safety of passing trucks in line with international standards.”

He went on to underline that “Turkish companies are interested at participating in Iran's infrastructure projects.”

The official added that Turkey will do its best to facilitate banking cooperation with Iran.

Since the beginning of the current Iranian calendar year (started March 20), more than ten Iranian trucks have suffered from terrorist attacks inside Turkish territories and the Iranian government has repeatedly urged Turkish officials to provide Iranian drivers with safety and compensate for previous losses.
