Iran’s food waste ‘in alarming levels’

TEHRAN, Oct. 16 (MNA) – Iran Urban Economics Scientific Association (IUESA) secretary has said Iran’s food waste equals to that of 10 European countries.

Seyyed Mohsen Tabatabaei Mozdabadi was touching upon Article 8 of general policies of Resistance Economy where he lamented the systematic lack of practices to manage consumption which the Policies had emphasized to introduce reforms to consumption patterns; “unfortunately, food waste, especially in the urban centers, is inordinately high and it goes contrary to Resistance Economy recommendations,” he added.

“Squandering public money and resources has negative consequences for cities economically and culturally; we should acknowledge that it has changed into a global malady deepening poverty gap and discrimination.”

Globally, about 870 million people do not have enough food to eat. Nutritional deficiency results in the death of 2.6 million children under 5; that equals to one-third of the world child population, Tabatabaei further said.

“Food waste in Iran is about 35 million tons annually while this figure for the UN as a whole is 90 million tons,” Tabatabaei added.

“For reducing food waste, Italy provides an ideal example; restaurants give their customers a bag so that people can take their extra food. France has passed a law to forbid wasting unsold food, and it fines those shops that do not cooperate with charities in order to distribute immediately food which expires soon,” he provided examples of good practices in food consumption management.
