Negotiations with US, Russia, IAEA constructive

TEHRAN, Sep. 27 (MNA) – Head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi said he held positive and constructive talks with US Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz, CEO of Rosatom Sergei Kiriyenko and Director General of IAEA Yukiya Amano on Monday.

Salehi met his Russian and American counterparts on the sidelines of the 60th Regular Session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna on Monday.

Touching upon his meeting with Sergei Kiriyenko, Salehi said Iran's ties with Russia is of strategic nature, especially with respect to nuclear cooperation Russia holds the most with Iran.

"Russia built Bushehr-1 Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in the worst conditions and the it is currently run by the powerful Iranian scientists," Salehi said, adding that the two sides also talked on the construction of two other power plants and conducted their inauguration ceremony earlier.

In the meeting, Salehi said, discussions were carefully reviewed on financing and other issues that had been previously talked to avoid delay in the projects.

Iran holds other cooperation plans under JCPOA with the Russians other than the construction of these two plants, including production of stable isotopes, which is a very big project, Salehi underlined.

"Unfortunately, there has been no opportunity to explain about the project to the Iranian nation, however, its significance will be clear when the project was organized in due time," AEOI head asserted, adding big steps have been taken in this regard and "I had a detailed discussion with Mr. Kiriyenko about the project."

Salehi said, "Kiriyenko announced today [Monday] that 38 tons of Iranian heavy water have been delivered to Russia about 7 or 8 days ago."

"This is a big stride after the implementation of JCPOA that Iran has sold 70 tons of heavy water to Russia and the US," he said, adding other European countries are also willing to buy Iran's heavy water and talks are underway with the European officials on the issue.

Salehi also pointed to his talks with Amano saying "we reviewed the inspection activities performed within the framework of the additional protocol, safeguards and JCPOA."

"We held detailed talks on technical cooperation," AEOI head asserted, "Amano evaluated the report on IAEA inspectors in Iran as positive."

On his meeting with US Minister of Energy Ernest Moniz, Salehi said, "we exchanged views on technical issues," adding "our colleagues in the Foreign Ministry pursue sanctions issue, and the responsibility is not directly with me and I am only responsible for technical issues and the commitmets of the parties according to JCPOA."

In the end, Salehi underlined that all in all the meetings were positive and he would hold other sessions with counterparts from different countries to take positive steps to develop nuclear cooperation with other countries.
