Iran, Cuba symbol of resistance against toughest sanctions

TEHRAN, Sep. 20 (MNA) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani arrived in Cuba Monday where he met with former Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

The two leaders discussed the importance of food production and threats to world peace.

“I am glad that my first bilateral trip to Latin America begins from Cuba, the symbol of resistance and struggle against colonialism in the continent,” Rouhani said in his meeting with Fidel Castro, during a one-day visit to Havana.

President Rouhani pointed to the resistance both Iranian and Cuban nations have displayed against external pressure and said “The revolution of Cuban people faced with the most severe economic sanctions imposed by the US and Iranian nation resisted during eight years of Imposed War against Iraq helped by the East and West; Iran and Cuba are the symbol of resistance to the most severe sanctions.”

Rouhani stressed that Iran, despite outrageous pressures and sanctions, keeps on the path of development and economic growth.

Fidel Castro, for his part, referred to the Islamic Revolution in Iran saying at the beginning of the Revolution in Iran, "I presented my positive comments about Imam Khomeini and the Iranian nation."

Leader of the 1959 Cuban Revolution described Iranian nation's resistance against pressure and sanctions impressive and added “it comes from knowledge and cultural development of the Iranian people.”

Pointing to President Rouhani's speech in the newly-ended 17th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Venezuela, Castro said that he listened carefully to the impressive speech of President Rouhani stressing that the speech and also presence of the Iranian president in the region has created a positive spirit among Latin American states.

Castro also pointed to the global water crisis in different parts of the world saying water will be the core issue in future plannings.

Monday’s sit-down with Fidel Castro was scheduled while retired president receives only a few people since Cuba’s 90-year-old.Iran’s president came to Cuba after attending the Non-Aligned Movement summit in Venezuela, which is the island’s main commercial and political partner.
