Zarif heads to Venezuela for NAM Summit

TEHRAN, Sep. 13 (MNA) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Zarif heading a delegation left for Venezuela Tue. morning to attend the 17th Non-Aligned Movement Summit on Margarita Island.

Deputy foreign ministers Seyyed Abbas Araghchi and Majid Takht-Ravanchi are accompanying Zarif on this trip.

The 17th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement is scheduled for September 13 to 18 on Venezuela’s Margarita Island, during which the South American country will assume the rotating presidency of NAM for the next three years.

The Senior Experts Conference will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, while foreign ministers of the 120 member states will gather together on Thursday and Friday. The 17th heads-of-states Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement will be held on September 17 and 18.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani as the head of NAM member states will depart for Venezuela on Friday to attend the heads-of-states Summit where he is scheduled to deliver a speech and hand over the presidency of the movement to the Latin American country. On the sidelines of the Summit, President Rouhani will also hold meetings with a number of leaders of other NAM member countries.

President Rouhani will then depart for New York to attend the 71st UN General Assembly Session from Sep. 20 to 26. 

The 16th NAM Summit was held in Sep. 2012 in Tehran during which Iran took over the presidency from Egypt.

With 120 member states, the NAM is the second largest international body after the United Nations. It has 53 members from Africa, 39 from Asia, 26 from Latin America and the Caribbean, 17 observer countries and 10 observer organizations.
