Sourian claims gold in Istanbul to book Olympic spot

TEHRAN, May 07 (MNA) – Iranian Greco-Roman wrestler finished first at the last OG World Qualification Tournament in Turkey to snare a Rio berth.

The 2016 Olympic Games (OG) World Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament 2 is underway in Istanbul of Turkey while Iran’s 59kg wrestler Hamid Sourian won the title on Friday to add the finishing touch to the collection of Iran’s Greco-Roman Olympic tickets to Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Having reached the final encounter by attaining three wins in a row against Croatian, German and Ukrainian rivals, Sourian overwhelmed Jesse Thielke of the US in less than one minute by technical fall in order to win the gold medal.

The Iranian seven-time World Champion, Hamid Sourian had failed to find his way to Rio Olympics at the 2015 UWW World Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas as well as in two qualifying tournaments held in Kazakhstan and Mongolia though he broke the spell by showing stunning athletic skills at Turkey's qualification tournament on Friday in order to receive the only remaining quota for Iran’s Greco-Roman squad.

Underway in the Turkish capital of Istanbul between May 6–8, the 2016 World Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament 2 is the second of two worldwide qualification tournaments for the 2016 Olympics while the top two competitors in each weight class will qualify.
