During the visit which came at the invitation of Iranian deputy Foreign Minister for Arab-African Affairs, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the United Nations special envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed will hold talks on the latest developments in the Arab country with Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his deputy Amir-Abdollahian.
Cheikh Ahmed is visiting Iran following his trips to Saudi Arabia and Oman.
In a phone conversation Tuesday evening, Amir-Abdollahian and the UN envoy deemed the only possible solution to Yemeni crisis a focus on the country’s national dialogue.
The Iranian diplomat, while commending Cheikh Ahmed’s efforts for improving the situation in Yemen, highlighted the urgent need for an end to military aggression in Yemen and advocated political solutions to stop the massive human disaster in the impoverished Arab country.
Yemen has been witnessing unyielding attacks by Saudi Arabia since late March. The Saudi aggression has reportedly claimed the lives of more than 7,100 people and injured nearly 14,000 others, in addition to dealing heavy damage to the country’s facilities and infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the United Nations and its Security Council have largely remained silent on the ongoing Saudi acts of aggression against Yemen.
