Russia, Ukraine ministers discuss peace in Ukraine

BERLIN, Nov. 07 (MNA) – The Russian FM Sergei Lavrov and Ukrainian FM Pavlo Klimkin analyzed the prospects for peace in the region of Donbass, and in particular, the holding of elections.

With mediation of their counterparts from Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and France, Laurent Fabius, the heads of the Russian and Ukrainian diplomacy evaluated in Berlin the advancement and implementation of agreements signed in Minsk.

Steinmeier considered as positive, in general and by the warring sides, the fact of the respect of a truce put into effect since September 1st in the regions of Donetsk and Lugansk, which proclaimed their independence on March, 2014.

However, the German Minister considered that this is far from sufficient and urged for a mutual solution to hold regional elections in these republics.

But Moscow denounced that Kiev, where was installed a right-wing pro-west government, following a coup d'etat in February 2014, refuses to recognize the authorities of the self-proclaimed Governments in Southeast Ukraine.

More than 6,000 people have died since April last year, when the army and the National Guard, integrated almost entirely by neo-fascists, started operations of punishment against the population in Donbass, which opposed the coup Executive.

According to the head of German diplomacy, Moscow influenced the cancellation of the elections, which he described as unilateral, in reference to the elections planned by the authorities of Donetsk and Lugansk.

Steinmeier considered possible to hold elections in 2016 in Southeast Ukraine, contrary to the statement recently made by Klimkin, who demanded a solution to the issue this year.

The meeting in this capital should also address the provision of humanitarian aid for the population affected by the conflict and infrastructure problems.
