Zarif condoles death of Iraqi official Ahmed Chalabi

TEHRAN, Nov. 04 (MNA) – Iranian FM Zarif expressed his condolences over the death of veteran Iraqi politician Ahmed Chalabi, a vocal opponent of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif offered his condolences over the death of Ahmed Chalabi “as one of the influential figures in Iraq’s political scene” to Iraq’s government, parliament and his family.

Ahmed Chalabi, a veteran Iraqi politician known as the key factor in overthrowing one of the most brutal dictatorships in the world, passed away at 71 on November 3 amidst the most critical stage of the political process in Iraq and while his expertise was most needed to settle differences and bring unity among political parties.

According to Jabar abdel Khaliq, a member of parliament, Chalabi suffered a heart attack at his home in the Baghdad.

At the time of his death, he was a member of parliament and the head of the finance committee. Before that he served briefly as the interim oil minister and deputy prime minister in 2005 and 2006.
