Theodor Friedrich the representative of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Cuba said that Havana is an advanced country regarding its programs for social protection, school food and support for elderly people.
Friedrich said that nevertheless, the country needs to make efforts to confront threats caused by climatic change, drought and degradation of ground and FAO will continue helping Cuba in the search of solutions to such problems.
The financial help allocated by FAO for Cuba was $63.4 million until 2010, but Friedrich told the local reporters that currently the amount ranges from $65 to $70 million.
Friedrich said that such funds have been planned for aid projects in agronomy and food, initiatives that have had great impact in Cuban economy.
The future joint working agenda is focused on the Sustainable Development Goals and the Cuban project for 2018.
On occasion of the 70th anniversary of FAO and 26th anniversary of the World Food Day, FAO reiterates its commitment to agricultural production and effective means to eradicate poverty in rural areas.
For both anniversaries, that will be celebrated next October 16th, FAO representatives in Havana have scheduled activities throughout Cuba.
Friedrich said that October 16th will be dedicated to social protection and agriculture to break the cycle of rural poverty, something that is linked to the Agenda for Sustainable Development, recently approved by 193 countries at the United Nations.
