Turkey reaches 2,880,000 unemployed

ANKARA, Sep. 16 (MNA) – Turkey reported 2,880,000 people unemployed in June this year, despite economy grew by 3.8 points in the second quarter, said the National Institute of Statistics on Tuesday.

Unemployment reached 10 percent of the working population, said economist Muammer Komnurcuoglu, quoted by the online version of the newspaper Todays Zaman.

This toll represents an increase of 226,000 unemployed people compared to the same period last year, all this despite the package of measures implemented in late April to boost the economy.

Such results were released in the middle of preparations for early elections in November, in which the ruling party Justice and Development (AKP) is seeking to recover the majority of seats at parliament, lost on June 7.

Still, the ruling party had in its favor the surplus of $210 million USD achieved in August this year, said the newspaper.
