Iran to launch Sahand destroyer within months

TEHRAN, Aug. 17 (MNA) – Reporting on the final phases in the manufacturing of the Sahand destroyer, Navy Commander has said it will be launched till March 2016.

Pointing to the deployment of an Iranian naval fleet to Russian territorial waters, Navy Commander Habibollah Sayyari stated that, “last week we hosted Russian naval fleets and we are hoping that our warships will dock at the Russian port city of Astrakhan same as the previous year."

“Indeed, besides consolidating maritime relations with Russia, we are seeking promotion of maritime diplomacy and fulfillment of the Leader’s measures on the World’s seas,” he added.

Reffering to the presence of the 35th navy fleet in the Gulf of Aden, Sayyari asserted that, “currently 35 navy fleets are carrying out missions to provide security for Iranian ships."

Stating that these fleets are sending a message of peace and friendship for regional and trans-regional nations, the head of the Iranian Navy added that, “our nation is looking for peace and diplomacy and we would confront Iranophobia and Shia-phobia.”

Sayyari stressed that, “another important issue is ensuring the country’s security and considering the increasing threat posed by piracy in the Gulf of Aden, we have to be present in there to avoid any sort of damage to the country’s economy.”

Discussing the features of Mowdge 5 class destroyer, navy commander stated that, “we are undertaking a project consisting of ‘Jamaran’, ‘Damavand’, and ‘Sahand’ destroyers,” adding that, “The construction phase of Sahand destroyer is 70% through and is almost ready to get launched.”

He also referred to the Fateh (Conqueror) submarine and said that, “this submarine is a worthy achievement by Maritime Department of Defense and the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy which manifests the capabilities of the country’s young experts in an advanced technological field like submarine manufacturing."

Stating that before the Revolution and during the Imposed War Iran did not own home-made submarines, he added that, “we gained the technology of making submarines in 1991 and now after 24 years the country’s young experts have made the same accomplishment which indicates the country’s prosperity."

“In the past few days we have had tough battles with pirates who were highly well-equipped but were defeated in the end,” concluded Sayyari.
