Iran’s Ardabil, Russia’s Volgograd to be sisters

ARDABIL, May 23 (MNA) – Iran’s Ardabil and Russia’s Volgograd are set to be twinned to develop industrial and commercial cooperation.

The President of Ardabil Province’s Chamber of Commerce, Mine, and Agriculture Hossein Pirmoazzen met with Rasht-based Russian Consul General on Saturday to sign deal announcing Ardabil city of Iran with Volgograd city of Russia as sister cities in a bid to develop commercial ties and stabilize bilateral interactions.

Calling Volgograd an industrial center in Russia, Pirmoazzen highlighted Ardabil’s capacity for commerce and prospected a bright future of thriving for both cities in tie.

Iranian official highlighted the political stability of Iran and valued it as an opportunity to develop Iran-Russia trade as Ardabil is producer of many agricultural products Russia imports and Ardabil, on the other hand, needs some of Russian food products.

"As exchange volume of Iran and Russia has been on curb in recent years, now that both countries are sharing the experience of sanction it would be a good idea to join against brutal sanctions imposed on both nations," Pirmoazzen stated.

He also called for facilitation of visa issuance for traders of both Russia and Iran to facilitate more commercial trips.

Referring to financial problems of exchanging currencies, Pirmoazzen underlined the move made by Iranian Central Bank and Russian bankers in last week and called it another progress in bilateral ties.

Last week in a meeting of Iran-Russia Joint Chamber of Commerce in Tehran, the representatives of two Russian banks visited Iran to examine the possibility of establishing a joint bank account. Russia’s Mir Business Bank announced its readiness to facilitate money transfer for Iranian traders. The move is aimed at easing the transfer of money earned from Iran's exports to Russia and Central Asia. The two countries have been looking for alternative ways of expanding bilateral ties since Western economic sanctions came into effect.

Vice president of Iran-Russia Joint Chamber of Commerce was present in Saturday meeting of Pirmoazzen and Russian Consul General and elaborated on the merits of Northern provinces of Iran in trading with Russia and urged more trade as the North-South corridor is in perspective.
