Iran free squad crowned Asian cup

TEHRAN, May 08 (MNA) – Iran’s freestyle wrestling team has been crowned as Asian champion in the 2015 Asian Wrestling Championships in Qatar.

The Iranian national freestyle wrestling team won the 2015 Asian freestyle championship, in another show of might weeks after it claimed the World Cup in the United States.

In the 61-kilogram class, Behnam Ehsanpour after beating opponents on the way to final lost the title to Kazakhstan’s last year’s 61kg bronze medallist Daulet Niyazbekov. Daulet won the first gold medal for Kazakhstan by winning final, after been awarded the win over Ehsanpoor following a 3-3 stalemate in the final. Seconds to the end of the match, Ehsanpour was 4-3 ahead but following a protest from Kazakhstan the jury changed their mind.

Iran's 97-kilogram wrestler Mohammad Hussein Mohammadian beat his first opponent Ali Khan zhumayev of Kazakhstan 6-2. He downed his second opponent from Tajikistan 13-2 and in semi final beat his Japanese adversary to get to final and beat his Kyrgyz rival.

Another Iranian finalist Peyman Yarahmadi proved a bad day for the Japanese team as he defeated Daisuke Shimada for the first place of the 74-kilogram category.

Yarahmadi comfortably beat Muslim Evloev of Kyrgyzstan in the quarterfinals 5-0 after winning Tajikistan's Azamat Sufiev in Octofinals by Technical Superiority 10-0.

To prove to be strong enough for title, in the final bout, Yarahmadi overcame Uzbek Rashid Kurbanov 2-0 who held 2013 Asian Championships title.

The first day of the competition saw Iranian wrestlers win two gold medals by Masoud Esmaeilpour and Alireza Karimi while Komeil Qasemi and Younes Sarmasti gained a silver and a bronze respectively.

Iran's 75-kilogram wrestler Younes Sarmasti who had lost in the final bout to Kyrgyz wrestler managed to win the bronze medal play-off (repechage) versus his Uzbek opponent to win the solo bronze medal of the Iranian team.

Iran’s early championship in the Doha games came despite a one-man deficit in the team with Saeid Dadshpour failing to attend the games due to injury.

On April 12, Iran’s wrestling team managed to beat the US outfit to claim the 2015 Freestyle Wrestling World Cup.
