Australian FM arrives in Tehran

TEHRAN, Apr. 18 (MNA) – Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has arrived in Tehran early this morning.

The official is scheduled to hold meetings with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif and President Hassan Rouhani to discuss the expansion of ties, cooperation on fighting ISIL as well as the condition of Iranian refugees in Australia.

The visit is of high importance as this is the first time during the last decade that a high ranking Australian official travels to Iran. Bishop is visiting Iran on the invitation made by Iranian FM.

Iran and Australia have a positive history in economic ties and trade and the removal of sanctions could be an opportunity for both sides to develop the ties further.

Australia has maintained a continuous diplomatic presence in Iran since the Australian Embassy in Tehran was established in 1968. Iran has had an embassy in Canberra since 1971.
