Senior MP says Intl. treaties ‘must be ratified’ by Parl.

TEHRAN, Apr. 02 (MNA) – A senior parliamentarian has written a letter to president Rouhani highlighting that international treaties and conventions must be ratified by Majlis ‘regardless of the topic.’

Ahmad Tavakoli, senior Principalist parliamentarian, who represents Tehran, wrote a letter to president Hassan Rouhani last night, where he emphasized that whatever the outcome of nuclear negotiations, “if it would be abiding for Iran,” it must be considered that “international treaties, conventions, and agreements must be ratified by Majlis.”

Mr. Tavakoli addressed his letter to a ‘high honourable brother Hassan Rouhani,’ where he believed that the ‘indefatigable and Revolutionary negotiators of your cabinet’ had reached the finish line after months of strenuous talks to protect ‘Iranians rights.'

“A team of 5-6 Iranian diplomats faced with a team of 30-40 highly skilled experts during 18 months of difficult negotiations; they displayed valiant negotiating skills and leverage without sinking to the depths of making concessions; in such a demanding situation, I would remind you of two very crucial points, however I assume that our negotiating friends carefully recognize these two points astutely,” wrote Tavakoli. “1. Any statement under whatever topic, if is binding for Iran, will be inevitable for the government and state to implement, as asserted clearly by international conventions, such as Vienna Agreement; so, great care should be exercised so as to prevent damage to our beloved Iran; 2. Article 77 of the Constitution stipulates that international conventions, treaties, and agreements should be ratified by Majlis, to which the Guardian Council interpreted the Article as necessitating ratification by Parliament of any convention and treaty which are legally binding for Iran, regardless of the topic,” read the letter.
