Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his American counterpart John Kerry began new round of nuclear talks in Lausanne, Switzerland this morning.
Head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Ali Akbar Salehi, Iranian Deputy FMs Seyed Abbas Araghchi and Majid Takht Ravanchi, special assistant to Iran’s president Hossein Fereidoun and US Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz also participated in the meeting.
Speaking to reporters, Seyed Abbas Araghchi said that April 2 is set as the date when both sides (Iran and the 5+1 states) would reach a resolution over outstanding issues.
“That is the point to say that we were able to reach a solution and to open the locks; now, three months later, we must continue to end the differences and bridge the gaps,” Araghchi said, adding that, “if we conclude the locks still remain in place, we may then decide not to continue; when we cannot open the locks, we will not reach any solutions on the details, either.”
Despite progresses made in the latest round of negotiations, Araghchi acknowledged that gaps still remained in nuclear talks between Iran and the Sextet.
To hold negotiations with EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini and foreign ministers of European parties on Monday, Mohammad Javad Zarif is due to Brussels, Begium before returning to Lausanne.
Iran and the 5+1 have held nuclear talks in an effort to bridge their differences and facilitate a comprehensive accord ahead of a July 1 deadline.
