Iran’s negotiators to depart for Lausanne Sunday

TEHRAN, Mar. 14 (MNA) – Iran’s negotiating team headed by Mohammad Javad Zarif will leave Tehran for Lausanne tomorrow as part of the 5+1 talks on Iran’s nuclear program.

Iran’s negotiating team headed by Iranian FM Mohammad Javad Zarif will leave Tehran for Switzerland tomorrow to hold fresh round of nuclear talks in Beau-Rivage Palace hotel in Lausanne.

Head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali-Akbar Salehi, Iran’s Deputy FMs Seyed Abbas Araghchi and Majid Takht Ravanchi are reportedly among the negotiating team memebers headed by Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman and the US negotiating team will travel on March 15 to Switzerland, where they will join Secretary of State John Kerry to meet with Iranian officials. These bilateral consultations take place in the context of the 5+1 nuclear negotiations with Iran and thus include Deputy Secretary General for the EU's External Action Service Helga Schmid and her team.  At the request of Secretary Kerry, Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz will travel to Lausanne to join in the negotiations.  

The US delegation will also include Robert Malley, Senior Director for Iran, Iraq, and the Gulf States, National Security Council, James Timbie, Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, Paul Irwin, Director for Nonproliferation, National Security Council, Christopher Backemeyer, Principal Deputy Coordinator for Sanctions Policy, Department of State, Kevin Veal, Director of the Office of International Nuclear Safeguards, National Nuclear Security Administration, Department of Energy.

Felicia Swindells, Senior Sanctions Policy Advisor, Office of Foreign Assets Control, U.S. Department of the Treasury, Newell Highsmith, Deputy Legal Advisor, Department of State, Joshua Black, Chief, Sanctions and Counterterrorism, U.S. Mission to the United Nations, Alan Eyre, Persian Language Spokesperson, Department of State, Mark Appleton, Special Advisor to the Secretary, Department of Energy, and Julia Jacoby, Special Assistant to Under Secretary of State Sherman are also among the list of US officials going to Lausanne.

As another part of nuclear talks, Mohammad Javad Zarif will also hold negotiations with EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini as well as his French, German and British counterparts on Monday in Brussels, Belgium.

The new round of negotiations will reportedly last till March 20.

The 5+1 group, which comprises the United States, Russia, China, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, finished another round of negotiations with Tehran on Thursday in the Swiss city of Montreux.

The Iran negotiations with the Sextet have taken place since November 2013 and aims to ensure the peaceful character of Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for lifting the sanctions imposed on the country.

During talks in Vienna in last November, the negotiations led to extension of the deadline for reaching a final agreement to July 2015.
