Former parliament building now hosts the Assembly’s meetings, where the members of the Assembly sit in crimson red seats. The session also elected Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi, former deputy-head of the Assembly in an election held after the death of Ayatollah Mahdavi Kani in October 21 2014.
Assembly’s sessions usually is held in two days. Ayatollahs Mohamad Momen, Mohammad Yazdi, Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, and Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani ran for the position. In the first round no single candidate could secure enough votes to assume the position and Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani and Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi came triumphant for the second round where Ayatollah Yazdi managed to win 47 votes out of a total of 73 votes cast to follow the deceased Ayatollah Mahdavi Kani as the head of the Assembly.
Ayatollah Yazdi is the former head of Qom Seminary School and deputy-head of the Assembly. He was also head of the Judiciary (1989-1999), a Parliamentarian in 1st and second assembly, and a member of the Constitutional Review Council, and the Assembly’s presiding board.
The Assembly’s session would also address the most pressing issues of the country.
Assembly of Experts brings together the most ‘qualified faqihs,’ who, according to Article 107 of the Constitution, appoints the Leader and oversees his conduct. Ayatollah Ali Feiz Meshkini (1982-2006), Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani (2006-2010), and Ayatollah Mahdavi Kani (2010-2014) have been former heads of the Assembly. The new head will have the office for a year until next round of the Assembly elections nearly a year from now.
