This morning President Hassan Rouhani and a number of his cabinet members including Mahmoud Nili Ahamadabadi, the candidate for the position, went to Iran’s Majlis to attend the session for confidence vote.
President Rouhani introduced Nili as a ‘revolutionary veteran’ person who can bear responsibility of the position. Rouhani asserted that his government’s “approach to the Parliament is based on respect, morality and law.”
“We do not want universities turn into a political place for different political parties, though, university student should be aware political issues.”
Following Rouhani’s introduction of candidate minister, several MPs delivered speech for and against Mahmoud Nili.
Mahmoud Nabavian was the first MP to speak against the candidate and criticized Nili for his management background in Tehran University and its faculties. Nabavian believed that several events opposing religious teachings had received permission during his term. He also slammed Nili for his stance during 2009 post-election events.
Hamid Qasim Osmani, addressed Majlis for Nili and said, “If Nili was not innocent during 2009 unrest, President Rouhani would not have introduced him as a candidate.”
“He has devoted his life to academic effort and brought industry and academia together,” he continued, “he has published 90 scientific papers which is a good resume for such a position,” said Osmani.
Mahmoud Nili had half an hour to respond to oppositions and defend his plans for the post, before MPs cast their votes of confidence or vice versa.
Previous Minister of Higher Education Reza Faraji Dana was impeached on August 20 and failed to receive a confidence vote from the Parliament.
Among 246 votes, 160 voted against, almost twice the 69 votes for Mahmoud Nili Ahmadabadi.
