Cardiac cell therapy; 95 per cent success

TEHRAN, June 25 (MNA) – Head of cardiovascular group of Cell Therapy Center at Royan Institute has said cardiac cell therapy has been successful in 95 per cent of patients.

Dr. Hoda Ma’dani told Iran’s state news agency IRNA today that since the operation of the cardiac cell therapy center in 2007, so far 300 patients had been treated with success level of 95 per cent.

Just until a few years ago, you could not find in books of medicine a word of relief for the heart, the body’s most important organ, that is, tissue-organ repair. At the time, it was supposed that an individual had the same number of cardiac cells from birth to death. However, in 2000, researchers found that the heart regularly repaired itself, just in the manner of skin, lungs, and liver, albeit in lower levels.

Today, research shows that heart has 2-3 billion cells, of which 3 million die everyday and the heart replenishes with new cells. Thus, every 5 years, all cells of heart is replaced by new ones.

Scientists have found that stem cells do the job in the heart, bestowing the human with its normal life through repairing cardiac cells.

“If the process of repairs is impaired by myocardial infarction or inborn hear disorders, the number of cells will decrease, thus posing problems to the individual,” said she, “to examine the success rate of cell therapy, multiple criteria, including echo, MRI scans, a 6-minute walking test, PROBNP blood test, and the general condition of the patient is taken into account,” she added.
