Oil pipeline leak spills tons of oil into environment in Gachsaran

TEHRAN, April 13 (MNA) – A pipeline break in oil-rich Gachsaran region in southwestern Iran has spilled thousands of barrels of crude oil into the environment.

Gachsaran hosts 5500 Km. of oil pipelines the major part of it had eroded away in the course of years of operation; yesterday, a 26-inch caliber pipeline broke in the Dej Suleiman region of Gachsaran and leaked large amounts of black gold into the environment.

The same pipeline carries 500,000-600,000 barrels of oil into export platforms in Persian Gulf coasts daily. Erosion has been reported the major cause of the leaks.

The repair team of Gachsaran Oil Company is in the location to repair the leaky pipe to be completed within an hour.

The provincial office of the Department of Environment in Khuzestan has not provided any report and possible damages to the nature yet.
